Staying up to date on health and safety topics is essential to all professionals working in the resources sector.
As the Interim Chair of the AusIMM Health and Safety Society (H&S Society), I strongly encourage all members to join the H&S Society to receive news and resources relevant to this important field.
Many AusIMM members have health and safety KPIs as part of their employment performance measurement. Safety is surely embedded as a ‘way of thinking’ for every mining professional. We should all have an ongoing interest in the highest standards of health and safety not just for ourselves, but for the benefit of our family, friends and colleagues too.
Our aim is to encourage all members of other AusIMM Societies to become members of the H&S Society, so that you receive newsletters showcasing the latest thinking on safety and receive information on upcoming professional development opportunities.
The H&S Society can add significant value to people by sharing experiences and providing guidance and advice around safety, including safety in mine design. The Society is also planning to undertake reviews on technical publications and consider recent incidents and emerging trends. We also plan to provide a regular feature with each of the mines regulators across the regions – including Australia, New Zealand and perhaps more widely into Indonesia, Canada, US and India. This will allow some sharing of strategies, focus areas, areas of concern, highlight best practice, etc.
The H&S Society Committee as individuals, or as a group with their combined years of experience, can provide an indirect resource and guidance to members out in the field.
To join the Health and Safety Society, simply visit the Members’ Area of the AusIMM website then click the ‘Join a Community’ link and tick the box for Health and Safety Society.
We can all make a contribution to improving safety, and one way to achieve this is to ensure health and safety awareness forms part of what we do every day.
