On 27 October the AusIMM Canberra Student Chapter and Australian National University (ANU) hosted two ANU alumni, Elliot Kahn (an AusIMM NPN Committee member) and Alex Waters, to given a series of talks and practical sessions that covered the role of geosciences throughout the mining value chain.
Elliot and Alex drew on their experiences having worked respectively for BHP and Gold Fields in both open pit and underground operations and exploration, allowing them to provide a balanced perspective on the topics. Some of the topics covered included overviews of the mining industry, a day in the life of geologists, the implications of geoscience on mining methods, career options and practical exercises that focused on drill hole interpretation using geochemistry and geophysics.
The group of students from ANU had the opportunity to have significant interaction and to gain guidance on their transition from university into work. When the day was done, an informal networking session enabled people to follow up on any questions from the day.
Elliot is looking to expand this initiative and to run similar talks in areas where mining may be under represented (like Canberra) and where students may benefit from hearing from speakers who are in the early stages of their career.
