Seizing career opportunities – Newman Branch presentation report

  • By Adam Foot, Chair, Newman Branch

The AusIMM Newman Branch recently welcomed Chris Davis, incumbent director of the AusIMM, to speak at our technical session.

The event was well-attended and drew members in from neighbouring operations as far afield as Hope Downs 4, Jimblebar, Mt Whaleback and Eastern Ridge operations. Acknowledging the hardship faced by local members and the broader Newman community, the branch decided as a one-off to provide the session free of charge as a way of allowing members the opportunity to gain some professional development.

In his talk titled ‘Jump through any open window’, Chris outlined how he had made a career by networking and seizing opportunities that were presented. Chris discussed key moments of personal insight received during his career from a variety of different sources, and detailed how these insights allowed him to change his behaviours to make him more effective as a professional.

Chris also discussed how his involvement in the AusIMM had exposed him to the industry’s best professionals, and how much value he had personally received through his involvement and participation at branch and subsequently board level of the organisation.

Addressing local members, Chris explained that ‘the AusIMM is more than a monthly publication and yearly bill. It is the only organisation that will be with you from the moment our professionals engage you in your school, all the way through your professional career where you are given the opportunity to network and learn technical skills from the industries best professionals, through to your death where they will celebrate your life and contribution’.

The discussion, debate and networking went well into the night and the branch received positive feedback on the event. Particular thanks must be given to the members who made a considerable effort to travel in from site for the event. Their attendance enhanced the overall experience greatly and made the local network a little bit wider. Attached is a photo from the night.

The branch is currently arranging a function for December 4 in conjunction with other professional organisations which is expected to be the largest professional networking event held in Newman in recent time. Further details will follow closer to the event.
