Official launch – We Are Metallurgists, Not Magicians

  • By Janine Herzig FAusIMM(CP) – Co-editor

MetPlant 2017 marked the official launch of Spectrum 23, We are Metallurgists, Not Magicians – Landmark Papers by Practising Metallurgists and Engineers.

The Spectrum is a collection of 63 papers, all thoughtfully chosen for their ongoing relevance to good design and operation, providing a unique resource for professionals at all career-stages, whether working in design, construction or the operation of metallurgical processing plants. It is a ‘must have’ for every resources professional’s book shelf. The selected papers do not have an ‘expiry date’ and pass on relevant experience and inspiration to the next generation of plant designers and operators.

The Spectrum – ready for sale at MetPlant 2017.
Two very proud editors – David Pollard and Janine Herzig (absent Geoff Dunlop).

The publication is presented in nine carefully assigned themed chapters, which include:

  • Overview
  • Geometallurgy
  • Project economics
  • Project design
  • Project management and delivery
  • Unit design and development
  • Sampling
  • Metallurgical accounting and control
  • Environmental management and sustainability
  • Process improvements and case studies.

The book is by, and for, practising metallurgists, design and construction engineers, planners, consultants and corporate managers.

With this publication, we hope that fewer wheels will be re-invented, and successful ideas and innovative thinking will inspire pathways to improved plant designs, operating efficiencies and profitability.

This book has been a real labour of love and the editors are so excited and proud of the outcome.

Many of the authors of papers included in the publication were present at its launch on 11 September in Perth, which was particularly wonderful.

From the moment David and Geoff invited me to become involved in this project 18 months ago, our shared strong belief and vision was that it must be produced as a hard copy in addition to electronically. This vision could only become reality by bringing on board industry sponsors.

We decided to jump in feet first and see how it went and the outcome speaks for itself.

We particularly thank our two Platinum Sponsors, Newmont and PanAust. Both companies have several papers which have been included. Aidan Giblett and his co-authors are responsible for six papers on various Newmont operations and Rob Dunne also has an inclusion.

Duncan Bennett and co-authors have done an outstanding job combining three separate papers in the developments chapter, outlining the journey taken by PanAust over four years towards process improvement and increasing forecasting accuracy at the Phu Kham Copper-Gold Concentrator in Laos.

We also thank our Gold Sponsor Ausenco who also feature in multiple papers, including Eddie McLean’s paper ‘We are Metallurgists, not Magicians’ from the MetPlant 2011 conference, which inspired the Spectrum title and is the very first paper. Greg Lane and co-authors have four papers in the project design, management and delivery chapters and Jeff Claflin and Steve La Brooy have co-authored two papers in the final chapter on process improvements and case studies.

We also thank Magotteaux for their Silver Sponsorship, as well as our five Bronze Sponsors who, between them, have seven papers included.

Their generous sponsorship has literally allowed us to realise our ambition to provide such a beautiful, high quality, hard copy Spectrum.

To encourage take up of the hard copy option, we have made the price as attractive as we possibly can.
