Hello my fellow AusIMM Geoscience Society (GeoSoc) members as we welcome another year.
I am honoured to serve as the GeoSoc Chair for 2017 and thank Pamela Naidoo-Ameglio for her efforts as Chair in 2016. Following elections in late 2016, we welcome four new committee members: Stella Martinez, Annette Pocock, Michael Leggo and Marcel Kamperman. In addition, Geoff Balfe has been re-elected to serve for another term. We also acknowledge the service of outgoing committee members Dale Sims, Aaron Radonich, Sarah Monoury and Dave Hammond.
The AusIMM Geoscience Society Committee is working toward delivering several events in 2017 to further aid the professional development of our membership. In particular, the upcoming Pilbara Field Skills Course to be held from 30 April to 5 May is a standout event that will provide valuable training for field based geological work.
GeoSoc is also preparing for participation in the Tenth International Mining Geology Conference in Hobart (20-22 September). The AusIMM Geoscience Society are assisting the organising committee in preparing for this event, and our society is currently proposing several workshops to take place at the conference. We would like to invite you to participate by reviewing papers for this conference. Please contact the AusIMM Geoscience Society to express you interest.
A full list of 2017 events is provided at the end of this article.
Overall, 2017 is shaping up to be a great year. There have been recent improvements in prices over a range of commodities and an apparent improvement in the geological job market.
