AusIMM Southern Queensland Branch JK Lecture and awards night

  • By Ray Koenig FAusIMM(CP)

The AusIMM Southern Queensland Branch JK Lecture is held to honour Julius Kruttschnitt who, in September 1930, accepted appointment as general manager of Mount Isa Mines Ltd (MIM) in Queensland and went on to spend 22 years with MIM in various roles.

The 2018 JK Lecture was held on September 13 at the Brisbane City Hall and was delivered by Andrew Clough. Andrew commenced in the mining industry in the Illawarra area in 1980 as a miner whilst studying a Bachelor of Mining Engineering part time at Wollongong University. After graduating with a First Class Honours degree, he progressed through a number of operational positions before completing a Master’s Degree in Mining Geomechanics at the University of New South Wales. He was Chief Inspector for Queensland Coal and prior to retirement was Vice President Health, Safety and Environment at Peabody Australia.

Each year, the JK Lecture presents an opportunity to demonstrate support to the next generation of mining industry professionals. The event includes the presentation of student awards to celebrate their academic achievements, including the presentation of the Ian Morley Thesis Prize. Additionally we recognise and acknowledge all the long-standing Branch members.
