AusIMM Kalgoorlie Branch hosted a technical talk on 2 May, 2017. It was presented by Peter Crennan, who works for DDH1, and Inia Heperi, who is employed at Newmont.
The topic of the two-hour presentation was ‘The Art & Science of Deep Directional Drilling.’ The event was well attended, with over 70 people showing up. There was a healthy mix between young industry professionals, students from local universities and retired experts.
Specific details and insights were provided about three-dimensional drilling. The topic was covered with a balance between engineering aspects and geological principals. Focus was given on diamond drilling and how it has evolved in the last century. The presentations were split between planning, tooling and execution of each parent hole.
Between the two presentations, the audience mingled and enjoyed some food and drinks. Overall, it was an excellent night for socialising and industry development.
