AusIMM Health and Safety Society committee member profile: Peter Newman

  • By Peter Newman

I am a mining engineer with 40 years’ experience in executive and operational roles, with time also spent in zero harm and human resource support roles.

In these roles I have spent ten years managing underground coal mines in Queensland and New South Wales, and held senior roles in both contract mining services and mine owner businesses.

My time spent as a mine rescue member, including the recovery operations after a major mine disaster, and that as the Head of Health and Safety involved in operations in Australia and overseas, provided me a deep insight into safety leadership effectiveness through risk management, mental health, organisational culture and discipline.

It is through my skills and experience, and working with other AusIMM Health and Safety Society members that I will look to provide guidance and resources to AusIMM members with the aim to make our industry a safer place to work.
