CMOC Northparkes Mines hosted its biennial open day on 16 May 2015.

Unlike previous events, it was held in the Northparkes Oval, Parkes, rather than at the mine, and invited a wide range of community groups to participate including schools and local clubs. Major mine suppliers once again put together a great exhibition of heavy underground and surface equipment including drill-rigs, loaders and training simulators. Family friendly attractions included rides for children, food stalls and market stalls and different activities at the exhibition stands. The mining open day event drew more than 3000 people and received much praise from the local community in making it a community-based event.

There was strong support from the team of Northparkes volunteers, who put up stands and exhibits related to each mine department. The mining department had a reconstruction of an underground tunnel including roof bolts and rocks, the processing plant had a working model of the plant flowsheet that included showing how flotation cells worked, the exploration team had core and different rock types on display and the ERT demonstrated equipment and rope work.  Bus trips to the mine took approximately 500 people on tours of the 3D immersion training room and surface operations.

AusIMM was represented by Lachlan Branch members Sarah Webster, Andrew Williams and Steven Hanani while Pamela Ameglio represented the Geoscience Society. The stand showcased the different activities and communities of interest within the AusIMM including WIMnet.  This included brochures, rocks, resin and an excellent interactive map of mining in Australia and the World that drew lots of interest as people pinned where they had worked. We also had enquiries about membership from people in the wider Central west mining community.

AusIMM would like to thank Northparkes Mine for the opportunity to host a stand again. Many thanks also to Andrew, Sarah and Steven for the sterling voluntary work in organising the exhibition material, explaining about professional development opportunities and mining careers and flying the AusIMM flag.
